The 852 Fabric story began in Oct 2018 with a small preorder and a handful of Facebook group members. I had been sewing for a few years, but struggled to find commercially available fabric designs that I liked.  From there, I was inspired by my home, Hong Kong, which is where the essence of my design influence is drawn. I like to think that I inherited my passion for textiles and the craft of sewing from my maternal grandfather, who ran a sewing and alterations business in Hong Kong during the 1960s. I am proud of this history and what we are creating today at 852 Fabric. 

We are a family owned and locally run business based in Tai Po, Hong Kong. We currently only operate online. Our designs are designed by myself and occasionally in collaboration with talented artists. As such, our designs are unique and not widely available anywhere else. 

Whether you're a seasoned sewist or have only just started your sewing journey, I welcome you. I hope you fall in love with our designs. 

ABOUT OUR FABRIC

Our fabric is printed in China, using only Oeko-Tex standard 100 certified inks and digital direct injection printing process. We offer a range of quality fabric bases for our preorders. 

OUR FABRIC BASES

COTTON WOVEN: 100% cotton in a medium twill poplin. Weight is 135gsm, width is approx 148cm. Suitable for most projects for woven fabric, such as quilting, shirts and dresses etc. 

COTTON LYCRA KNIT: 95% cotton, 5% spandex. Weight ranges from 200 to 240gsm, width approx. 148cm. Suitable for t shirts, leggings, baby garments, yoga wear etc. 

COTTON CANVAS: 100% cotton. Weight is 250gsm, width approx. 148cm.  Heavier than the woven or knit, this is suitable for tea towels, placemats, bags, shorts and trousers, jackets and cushions. 

DOUBLE BRUSHED POLY: 96% polyester, 4% spandex. Weight is 210gsm, width approx. 148cm. Super soft and stretchy. Softer than the cotton lycra knit. Perfect for leggings and winter pyjamas. Great for any garments next to the skin. 

SWIM: (seasonal) 88% polyester, 12% spandex. Weight is 2200-220gsm, width approx. 148cm. SPF50. 

RAYON: 100% rayon poplin. Weight is 150gsm, width approx 148cm. Perfect for summer dresses, light blouses, summer shirts and resort-wear.

COTTON FRENCH TERRY: (seasonal) 95% cotton, 5% spandex. Weight is 280-300gsm, width approx. 148cm. This is sweatshirt material, with small loops on the unprinted side of the fabric. 

BAMBOO FRENCH TERRY: 95% bamboo 5% spandex. Weight is 280gsm, width approx 145cm. This has a softer and more silky texture compared to CFT, and feels more luxurious. Drapes beautifully. .

PUL: 100%polyester. Weight is 160gsm, width 150cm. PUL or Polyurethane Laminate is a type of laminated fabric. PUL is waterproof, and is ideal for the outside of cloth diapers, diaper covers, cloth pads, and sandwich bags. It is a soft fabric (not stiff or crackly) with a little stretch. 

ATHLETIC KNIT: 95% Polyester and 5% Spandex. Weight 300 gsm, width approx 148cm. Perfect for sportswear and active wear, very stretchy, easy wash and quick drying. 

VINYL: 70% PVC and 30% Polyester. Weight 500gsm, width approx 140cm. This fabric is perfect for accessories such as wallets, bags, pouches and bookcovers.  The backing has a fine nap even with a thickness of 1mm, is easy to handle and sew on domestic machines.

COMMON FABRIC TERMINOLOGY

Bias: The grain of a piece of fabric at a 45 degree angle.

CL: Cotton/lycra knit. This is a smooth, knit fabric comprised of 95% cotton and 5% lycra. Our CL knit has excellent recovery with a four way stretch: horizontal, vertical and diagonal in both directions. CL will not fray.  

Custom fabric: Uniquely designed fabric created by a small business owner not available outside of a fabric host's custom fabric group. 

Grain: The direction that the fabric's fibers are knit or woven together. The grain of knit fabric is parallel with the fabric's selvage. The grain of woven fabric is parallel and perpendicular to the fabric's selvage. 

GSM: This is an industry standard term and refers to the weight of a fabric measured in grams per square metre. As most of our fabric bases are approx. 148 cm wide, we have also given the approx. weight per metre of our fabric based on our standard widths.

Preorder: Fabric that is available for purchase from 852 Fabric before it is printed. Please see the FAQ in the files for more information on how preorder rounds work. 

Selvedge: Fabric selvage is the tightly woven edge that runs along each side of a piece of fabric's lengthwise grain, which is also called the fabric's warp.

WOF: Width of fabric.
